MMB2011: The sixth international conference on Microtechnologies in Medicine and Biology

Microtechnologies in Medicine and Biology Conferences are highly focused and interactive meetings that gather people, who want to do Biology using Microtechnologies. Unlike many other conferences, MMB place the biological and/or the medical questions at the centre of the problem to be solved, rather than specific technologies.
The 6th International Conference on Microtechnologies in Medicine and Biology, MMB2011, will be held in 2011, in Lucerne in May 4-6th. The conference format was always kept fairly small with about 150 participants attending, among those a majority of students. Such exchanges are aimed to enhance and strengthen the potentials of microtechnologies in revolutionizing the fields of medicine and biological sciences through the development of new research tools and technologies. The past successes of MMB conferences are mainly due to the conference format (small number of keynote speakers and flash/oral presentations) but also to the high scientific level of the presenters. MMB2011 persists in this direction, since top-class researchers confirmed their venue, among those, the 2008 Nobel Chemistry Prize Winner, Prof. Roger Tsien, and Dr. Marie Csete, an outstanding research scientist who was formerly the Chief Scientific Officer of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. There is no doubt that Switzerland, one of the microtechnology cradles worldwide, is very well placed to hold such a meeting. Indeed the watch industry as well as microtechnologies began in the Jura region and the presence of leading international research centers in the clinical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, bioengineering and engineering sectors is a clear strength. In return, this event will contribute to further position Switzerland among the world leaders in microtechnologies for biology and medicine. This ED project includes four novel and in part unique aspects to this conference. First, NanoTera Meetings are interactive meetings between students and keynote speakers with exceptional scientific paths. The aim of these meetings is to stimulate and encourage students in a familiar environment at the beginning of their scientific career. Second, Keynote Presentations will be given by outstanding keynote speakers with complementary backgrounds. This will allow attendees to understand the challenges of technological as well as biological or medical issues.
Third, Flash/Poster Sessions, a trademark of MMB conferences, represent a unique opportunity for students to briefly present their work in front of the whole conference and then to discuss in details their research subject in front of their posters. This format was always very well appreciated in the past MMB conferences. Finally, in order to favor the attendance of students Registration Fees will be strongly reduced for Students. It should be pointed out that by the past, more than half of the attendees were students.
