How to Plan a Space with Multiple Workstations

As offices get larger, creating an effective space design can get more complicated. Fitting all you need into one large room without making the space seem too monotonous or busy can be difficult, especially when there are multiple workstations to be considered. Offices with multiple workstations can easily look like the dreaded 'cubicle farms' of the 1980s, which is something you surely want to avoid. It is possible, however, to design a space that can accommodate multiple employees in their own workstations while incorporating some visual interest and vibrancy in the office.

The latest office designs use multiple workstations in configurations that encourage sociability and networking by using curves and open walking space to break up the monotony of traditional offices. You could try using modular and flexible workstations that can easily be connected together to make an organic shape that encourages productivity without isolating the individual. It is important to find this balance between privacy and sociability when planning your workstations.

You also need to make sure that you do not overfill your office space with workstations. Large offices can easily look cramped when filled with furniture, despite their expansive size. To accommodate all of your employees without making your space look like an office furniture showroom, consider portioning off some rooms with partitioning walls or just plan your allocation of workstations carefully.

When placing individual workstations in your space, you should take care to create plenty of walking space between each. Consider arranging workstations in circles or curves, to make communication and movement between employees much easier. You should also incorporate efficient storage in your workplace design. Instead of using a large central storage cabinet that forces your employees to walk across the office every time they need to find something, consider installing a storage unit at each workstation or collection of workstations.

To add some visual interest to your workstations, apply a colour scheme through the office that uses one or two bright punches of colour. Avoid an over saturation of neutral colours, as well as predictable patterns that repeat throughout the space. Consider hanging some pieces of artwork in the office, while being careful to avoid crowding the walls too much.

To make the space seem more open and welcoming, consider foregoing office partitions in favour of space dividers that simply suggest an individual work space. You could, for example, use different workstation styles for different departments within the business, while ensuring that each workstation style is ergonomically supportive.
