Wireless sensor networks and publishing of sensor data on the Internet bear the potential to substantially increase public awareness and involvement in environmental sustainability. These technologies enable capturing sensor data by involving public authorities and the general public and making real-time information on environmental
conditions available to a wide public. Air pollution monitoring in urban areas is a prime example of such an application as common air pollutants have direct effect on the human health. However, bringing the vision of public involvement in environmental monitoring to a reality poses today substantial technical challenges for the communication and information systems infrastructure, to scale up from isolated well controlled systems to an open and scalable infrastructure where many nano-scale sensors generate terabytes of data.
Challenges that are not well addressed today are (1) dealing with the heterogeneity and widely varying characteristics of the sensor equipment, measurements and data analysis (2) supporting and exploiting mobility of sensors and (3) involving the community in a trusted, fair and transparent manner into the monitoring activity. Air pollution monitoring is particularly suited to study these challenges as they are particularly pronounced in this scenario. A wide variety of sensors (meteorological
data, air pollutants such as O3, NO2, NO, SO2, VOC and fine particles) is used and measurements have to account for atmospheric transport phenomena, sensors are frequently mobile (public and private vehicles, personal devices, airborne vehicles) and air pollution is today mostly a matter of public interest.
OpenSense will address key research challenges in the domain of information and communication systems related to community-based sensing using wireless sensor network technology in the context of air pollution monitoring:
- Reducing noise and data volume of heterogeneous sensor data by exploiting redundancies derived from complex environmental processes. Previous approaches only treated very regular sensor configurations and simple processes.
- Performing real-time data gathering with heterogeneous and mobile sensors and intermittent connectivity, in particular in urban environments.
- Compiling numerical models of complex spatial processes into qualitative approximations that can be used for efficient signal processing and sensor interpretation.
- Sharing measurement and model data through an open community platform in a trusted and fair environment, providing security against manipulation and faulty data.
Solutions to these problems affect typically all layers of an information and communication system architecture, with interdependencies and synergies among the different layers. For that reason the research team consists of experts in signal processing, networking, robotics, data management and qualitative reasoning. It has also proven experience and a well-established network of experts for environmental monitoring applications. We expect significant new insights from this cross-fertilization: interpreting data through environmental models allows to correct for sensing deficiencies, and interpreting real-world data in models at the scale we envisage has never been attempted before. In order to verify the appropriateness of the technical solution and demonstrate the benefit of the approach to users we will construct demonstration scenarios in collaboration with an expert group from the application domains.
The project will result in open technology that allows integrating diverse sensors, including mobile sensors, into a single environmental model. The information processing techniques we develop will provide important insights to enable other Nano-Tera application domains dealing with monitoring complex events.
The chosen applications of air pollution is still a serious environmental problem in Switzerland, despite many efforts that have been made to reduce emissions, and it is becoming an extremely important environmental issue in large areas of the world due the increasing urbanization. The technology we develop in this project will be essential to deal with these problems and thus can create significant opportunities for industrial
exploitation.

Wireless sensor networks and publishing of sensor data on the Internet bear the potential to substantially increase public awareness and involvement in environmental sustainability. These technologies enable capturing sensor data by involving public authorities and the general public and making real-time information on environmental
conditions available to a wide public. Air pollution monitoring in urban areas is a prime example of such an application as common air pollutants have direct effect on the human health. However, bringing the vision of public involvement in environmental monitoring to a reality poses today substantial technical challenges for the communication and information systems infrastructure, to scale up from isolated well controlled systems to an open and scalable infrastructure where many nano-scale sensors generate terabytes of data.
Challenges that are not well addressed today are (1) dealing with the heterogeneity and widely varying characteristics of the sensor equipment, measurements and data analysis (2) supporting and exploiting mobility of sensors and (3) involving the community in a trusted, fair and transparent manner into the monitoring activity. Air pollution monitoring is particularly suited to study these challenges as they are particularly pronounced in this scenario. A wide variety of sensors (meteorological
data, air pollutants such as O3, NO2, NO, SO2, VOC and fine particles) is used and measurements have to account for atmospheric transport phenomena, sensors are frequently mobile (public and private vehicles, personal devices, airborne vehicles) and air pollution is today mostly a matter of public interest.
OpenSense will address key research challenges in the domain of information and communication systems related to community-based sensing using wireless sensor network technology in the context of air pollution monitoring:
- Reducing noise and data volume of heterogeneous sensor data by exploiting redundancies derived from complex environmental processes. Previous approaches only treated very regular sensor configurations and simple processes.
- Performing real-time data gathering with heterogeneous and mobile sensors and intermittent connectivity, in particular in urban environments.
- Compiling numerical models of complex spatial processes into qualitative approximations that can be used for efficient signal processing and sensor interpretation.
- Sharing measurement and model data through an open community platform in a trusted and fair environment, providing security against manipulation and faulty data.
Solutions to these problems affect typically all layers of an information and communication system architecture, with interdependencies and synergies among the different layers. For that reason the research team consists of experts in signal processing, networking, robotics, data management and qualitative reasoning. It has also proven experience and a well-established network of experts for environmental monitoring applications. We expect significant new insights from this cross-fertilization: interpreting data through environmental models allows to correct for sensing deficiencies, and interpreting real-world data in models at the scale we envisage has never been attempted before. In order to verify the appropriateness of the technical solution and demonstrate the benefit of the approach to users we will construct demonstration scenarios in collaboration with an expert group from the application domains.
The project will result in open technology that allows integrating diverse sensors, including mobile sensors, into a single environmental model. The information processing techniques we develop will provide important insights to enable other Nano-Tera application domains dealing with monitoring complex events.
The chosen applications of air pollution is still a serious environmental problem in Switzerland, despite many efforts that have been made to reduce emissions, and it is becoming an extremely important environmental issue in large areas of the world due the increasing urbanization. The technology we develop in this project will be essential to deal with these problems and thus can create significant opportunities for industrial
exploitation.
