Program Summary

Nano-Tera.CH - Converging Challenges

The Nano-Tera.CH (NTCH) initiative aims at bringing Switzerland to the forefront of a new technological revolution driving engineering and information technology for health and security of humans and the environment in the 21st century.

The goals are, for example, to detect in real time different health risks and conditions through body-integrated bio probing, to reveal security risks through smart buildings and environments, to save energy through ambient sensing, and to detect and monitor environmental hazards such as floods and avalanches from inaccessible positions on earth.

The proposed strategy includes the convergence of both advanced R&D on micro/nano electrical/mechanical components and on tera-scale systems, which integrate and network different (nano) elements to achieve both local and global processing of extremely large (tera) amount of data.

Strategic Vision

Nano-Tera.CH - Matching Focus

Bettering human conditions through the monitoring of the human body and the environment, using large networks of micro/nano systems will have massive positive impacts for Switzerland. It will reduce social and health costs for the weakest (children, elderly, sick) and it will leverage Switzerland's strength in micro/nano systems.

Added-value, jobs and revenues will come from the expertise we will strengthen both in the nano-world and in the tera-scale distributed networks of nanodevices needed for final applications.

Scientific Program

Nano-Tera.CH - Health, Security and the Environment

Nano-Tera's mission includes collaborative research, education and tranfer to Swiss industry.

To achieve its research objectives, the nano-tera.ch program covers two major strategic axes:

  • Research and development of advanced technologies: the 5 vertical columns of the matrix = the technologies
  • Integration of these technologies into application fields: the 3 horizontal rows = the applications

Educational Program

Education is thus an essential element of the Nano-Tera.CH program. In particular, the Nano-Tera.CH program intends to broaden the doctoral program offered at various Swiss universities to achieve the breadth and depth typical of their American counterparts. Continuing education and Summer Institutes will be targeted too.

Demonstrators, Technology Transfer

Nano-Tera will produce embodiments of the research outcome into prototypes, which will act both as demonstrators and as technology drivers. Technology transfer to the Swiss industry will be achieved through collaborative projects and through targeted interaction.

Collaborations

Swiss industry, existing programs like NCCR-MICS, NCCR-NANO, NCCR-QP, research centres like CCMX, CCES are partners of Nano-Tera. This guarantees that the maximum value outcome can be transferred to the Swiss industry and academia.
