Implantable Medical Devices are increasingly being used to solve a wide variety of medical and research challenges. However, they introduce potential vulnerabilities to adversaries that can result in life-threatening situations as well as compromises of privacy. This workshop brings together researchers, practitioners and advocates from a range of perspectives to present recent research and experiences in this domain. The workshop format will be a set of invited talks followed by an interactive panel discussion.

The health industry is a growing aspect of the Swiss economy including devices, drugs and information technologies. Vulnerabilities or privacy breaches in any of these sectors can result in major losses and damage to the industry as well as a loss of confidence in future emerging technologies. Security and privacy play an important role in other Swiss industries, most notably banking, as well as being critical aspects of quality of life in a democratic society.

The project directly addresses Nano-Tera goals in the areas of both health and security. It involves direct collaborations with two RTD projects:

i-IronIC: Implantable/Wearable System for on-line Monitoring of Human Metabolic Conditions (Project Leader: Giovanni De Micheli of EPFL/LSI)
NutriChip: A technological platform for nutrition analysis to promote healthy food (Project Leader: Martinus Gijs of EPFL/LMS2)

and indirect relationships with two more:

ISyPeM: Intelligent Integrated Systems for Personalized Medicine
PlaCiTUS: Platform Circuit Technology Underlying Heterogeneous Nano and Tera Systems

The workshop will provide a unique forum for education and discussion across disciplines ranging from Electrical, Computer and Bio Engineering, to Computer Networks and Cryptography, to Medical and Health Sciences and finally Legal and Ethical disciplines. Security and Privacy in ED Form 8/14 IMDs is a meta-problem that arises due to the introduction of new technologies to solve pressing societal problems. This workshop seeks to define the parameters and extent of that metaproblem as well as proposing technological solutions.
